Montreal, April 7, 2026 — The Quebec Kinesiologists Federation enthusiastically welcomes the announcement from the Quebec government confirming the start of work aimed at integrating kinesiologists into the professional system. This step marks an important milestone for the protection of the public. Kinesiology will be recognized and supervised by the Office des professions du Québec.

There are currently more than 3,500 professionals working in kinesiology in Quebec, whose expertise is increasingly in demand in a sustainable health context. Kinesiologists contribute concretely to improving the health and well-being of the population, through physical activity, both in prevention, in rehabilitation, and in performance.

The integration of kinesiologists into the professional system will provide a clear practice framework, based on high standards of competence, rigor and ethics, while promoting better interprofessional collaboration, in a context where the challenges of access to care and the aging of the population are growing.

The Federation also recalls that the increased integration of kinesiology into the health network will generate concrete benefits for the population and for the health system, in particular by promoting prevention, optimizing care trajectories and contributing to the efficient use of resources.

In its publication, the Office recalls that: “The degree of autonomy enjoyed by kinesiologists in the exercise of their tasks and activities is important, whatever their place of work. Although their intervention may be part of a continuum of care, particularly in a clinical setting, they remain autonomous in the choice of interventions related to their field of practice. The specificity of their activities and the specialized knowledge and skills required make judgment on their practice difficult for people without their training or qualifications. This militates in favor of a supervision model based on peer regulation.” The Federation shares this analysis and emphasizes that the contribution of kinesiologists in various practice contexts directly responds to these concerns.

“The supervision of the practice will not only ensure the protection of the public, but also better define the role of kinesiologists in order to support a global and sustainable approach to health. This formal recognition will also help clarify their professional responsibilities, contributing to more coherent health pathways, while fully recognizing their contribution within the health system,” declared Marc-Antoine Pépin, president of the Quebec Kinesiologists Federation.

Next steps

The Quebec Kinesiologists Federation reiterates its full collaboration with the government and the Office des professions du Québec, as part of the work aimed at integrating the profession into the professional system. It thus intends to contribute to a rigorous, transparent process focused on the public interest, including the implementation of transitional measures promoting orderly integration and continuity of services.

Although the timetable remains to be specified, the Federation is committed to supporting its members and keeping them informed of developments in the matter in order to promote the harmonious implementation of professional supervision.
